Automatic Restoration Algorithms for 35mm film
نویسندگان
چکیده
Classical film restoration is based on special copying machines to improve the quality of safekeeping copies. Only a small class of defects can be removed by such a process, because the unit of manipulation is always the physical film strip. With help of digital image processing techniques the restoration process can be adapted for each frame or even pixel and also for many kinds of defects. This paper presents algorithms for automatic and semi-automatic defect detection and removal in digital image sequences. First an overview about typical defects in the 35 mm film domain is given. Then robust full automatic algorithms to detect dust, dirt and image vibration in noisy and disturbed environment are shown. To make expert user interaction with intermediate analysis data possible, detection and removal of defects is separated into a two step approach. Automatic algorithms for dust and dirt removal and for image sequence stabilization are presented as well as a semi-automatic algorithm for flicker and mold reduction is shown. Finally the algorithms are demonstrated and evaluated using several short film sequences.

Film from a Phonetics Laboratory of the 1920s
Silent 35mm movie footage has been discovered at UCL showing in detail the operation of a kymograph and of a sensitive flame. The experimenter who appears in the clips is almost certainly Stephen Jones, superintendent of the phonetics lab from its foundation in 1914. This paper documents the discovery and restoration of the film and analyses the content in relation to published work of the earl...

متن کاملSemi Automatic Digital Motion Picture Restoration System with Learning Capabilities
We have developed a semi automatic film restoration system, DIMORF (DIgital MOtion Picture Restoration System for Film Archives), working with a minimum effort of parameter settings and training, with adaptive learning abilities, at relatively high speed. The system is being applied for the restoration of old films, characterized by strong color distortions, scratches, dirt, vibration, and flic...
متن کاملStabilization of Vibration on Archive Films by Automatic Multi-scale Rof Selection
The cost of human operation is a bottleneck in the restoration of large quantities of archive films. Eliminating the vibration of a degraded image makes a difficulty in an automatic film restoration system. The vibration is usually caused by improper film transportation during the recording, copying or the digitization process. We have developed an automatic method for image stabilization consi...
متن کاملNew 35mm Cmos Image Sensor for Digital Cine Motion Imaging
Large format single-sensor digital cine cameras have emerged as an important worldwide creative choice for motion picture film origination. Most of these image sensors are based upon the established Bayer color filter array for encoding of the color components. Important advances in demosaicking algorithms have steadily improved the reconstruction of RGB video components that support the color ...
